Malaysia's interpretation reflects the country's unique circumstances, including:

• The Federal Constitution which places land and forest matters under state jurisdiction
• The National Forestry Act 1984 and state forestry enactments
• The National Land Code 1965
• The Aboriginal Peoples Act 1954
• International commitments such as CBD, UNCCD, and CITES

Principles and Criteria

For each of the seven Cancun Safeguards, Malaysia has developed specific principles, criteria, and indicators (PC&I) that provide a practical framework for assessing how safeguards are being addressed and respected.
